Growing Technology, Declining Human State?

I follow blogs and social media covering a varying array of topics. Working in the telecommunications industry, and being a programmer, has me spending a lot of time keeping up with what’s going on in the tech world. However, being a parent I also like to know how all of this new technology is going to affect my kids. For me there are deeper questions to consider, beyond just trying out the new shiny thing to hit the market.

I recently read this article by Tim Elmore with his take on what’s coming this year in the realm of new technologies, and what affects it’s going to have on the world as we know it.

Exciting and Scary New Realities Coming This Year

When I read, and see, how people are talked to and treated on social media, and then look at their affect on “the real world”, I have great concerns with where our world is heading.

When do we stop to ask ourselves if we should, and not just if we can?

When I see parents handing a mobile device to their teen, and worse pre-teen, I fear for the position we’re putting our kids in. There is so much that we’re giving them access to without guidance of any kind, or protection. Even I’m constantly questioning my own boundaries with my kids, and I’m one of the ones involved with powering all this new technology.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything” —but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. – 1 Corinthians 10:23 NLT

    When God Calls for Patience…

I’ve been caught up tonight in some major Google searching. “For what” you may ask, “where is God leading me?”. The realm of my searching was community of faith, postmodern youth outreach, and reading some about the idea of the emergent church. What does this all mean? I have no clue. I feel an urgency…

    The Call to Being Generous

If we consider how generous God was to give His son to die for us, his call for us to be generous in our giving pales in comparison. I’ve heard it said, by Robert Morris I believe, that we can’t out give God. I’m always challenged in the area of generosity, with even my time…
  • Where’s My 48 Hour Day?

The semi-circle, working from rest, following your purpose, and bringing calm to life. It seems nearly impossible to not get caught up in the crazy & busy world we live in. Even in ministry there seems to more things to do, or that could be done, then there is time. None of these things are…

    In The Beginning

(John 1:1-14) – John starts out describing a little about what the beginning was like. The Word was another name given to Jesus. It’s interesting that John starts out this way. It is very clear that the importance is placed on this description to setup the rest of the book. Jesus claimed he was God,…

    Camping Trip…Sa-weat!

What a weekend! I have to say that this weekend was the most fun and restful trip I’ve had in a long time. From the car-ride on Friday, to the trip back, the weekend was filled with amazing fellowship and much needed rest. On Friday Laura got to my house after work and we headed…

  1. Right on brother. This is a topic that I wrestle with. I wish I understood how to walk the line better. Social media specifically is a place people want to interact, yet I find my desire to engage in that platform lessen everyday. But, it is where business happens, groups happen, communication happens etc. I have considered eliminating all personal interaction and simply use it for business and group communication.

    1. Yeah, I completely left Facebook for like a year once. Unfortunately it made it hard to engage with people for some things. I still prefer grabbing a cup of coffee and engaging in deeper conversation with people.
